·      Extract from Press Release January 2008 - No “Butts” About It                   Farnham Community Task Force (chaired by Councillor Victor Duckett) is now working more closely with Farnham Town Council to address community safety issues both in the Town Centre and in surrounding areas of the Town.

The Community Task Force has as its members the Neighbourhood Officers from Surrey Police, representatives from the Crime Prevention Panel and Neighbourhood Watch, the local Community Safety Officer from Waverley Borough Council, the Students’ Union at UCCA, the Mayor of Farnham, officers from the Town Council and representatives from the local community. It is anticipated that there will also be a representative from the Fire and Rescue Service.

By working with the Town Council, the Task Force anticipate that they will become a force to be reckoned with, dealing with community safety problems throughout the Town.

In the past the Task Force has undertaken an Audit of the Town to highlight safety issues and have worked with Potters Gate School on a competition to design a poster to encourage people not to drop litter. “Don’t be mean, keep Farnham clean” posters can still be seen around the Town.

Future projects to be undertaken are a Town wide litter pick by working with local councillors and residents associations, publishing the street cleaning rota on Waverly, Farnham or the Task Force website and a further poster competition working with St Andrews School. This time the poster is to concentrate on the increasing problem of cigarette butts in public spaces. “Butt Out” is the name suggested at present.

Improved lighting in the Borough at the bottom of Castle Street is one topic for the future but residents are invited to contact the Task Force to highlight community safety issues in their area for discussion.
